Real Faith for the Real World Teen Track

Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6

So, you have a teenager. Now what?

An amazing opportunity to impact the world! That’s what. Teens are at an exciting time in life when they are about to embark on the adventure of their lifetime: adulthood.

But are they ready?

We have been by their side providing every need from birth. Like butterflies, they have gone through life cycles: infants, toddlers, young children, and tweens. As teenagers, they are in the “chrysalis” stage in their cocoons, anticipating an incredible metamorphosis into an adult.

We’ve loved them, nurtured them, and prayed for them. But we need to equip them for what they will face in our world today.

The Real Faith for the Real World teen track aspires to help you accomplish that task.

Being equipped gives a teen confidence to face what comes his or her way. The teen years may just be the most critical time you have to spend with your child preparing them for what lies ahead.

After they leave the nest, whether they choose to serve in the mission field, attend college, or seek employment after high school, they will encounter those who will question their faith: you can count on it! It may have already happened in their peer groups or even at church.

Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.
—Ephesians 6:10–11 (NIV)

Let’s equip them…

Great Homeschool Conventions’ Real Faith for The Real World teen track is a series of thirteen to fourteen workshops over the three days of each convention, specifically designed to make your teen aware of today’s issues. It is a faith-based apologetics track which addresses today’s most controversial issues from all standpoints, showing how our faith can be applied to undergird the reasons that we believe as we do.

Many in the media would have you believe that Christians are a dying breed. Our teenagers are our chance to send a positive light out into the world. The teen track is a wake-up call to alert teens to the fact that they need to know the issues. They need to develop critical thinking that is Biblically based. They need the tools to be able to defend their faith.

A life-changing experience…

But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear. 1 Peter 3:15
—King James Bible “Authorized Version,” Cambridge Edition

A high school teacher often told his civics class, “You are at an age when you can no longer respond to a question saying, ‘I don’t know’.” This teacher required his students to actually pick up a newspaper and read about current events. Each morning, they had to be prepared in class to give their opinion on the previous day’s headlines, and had to back up the reasons for those opinions. This requirement caused them to think. It made them realize, possibly for the first time, that they were quickly approaching adulthood. It was a chance to explore the issues at hand, gather heart-felt opinions on the issues, and convince their peers to believe what they believed concerning that issue.

The Real Faith for the Real World teen track offers that same appeal. If your teen doesn’t form their own opinions, whose will they accept?

Your teenager is invited to attend a life-changing experience…a real opportunity to open their eyes to controversial issues, a real opportunity to help them realize they need to have opinions, and a realopportunity to equip them to be especially prepared to give answers as to why they believe what they believe.

We are also honored to have Cedarville University sponsoring the track so we can offer this track as affordably as possible.

Dr. Jay Wile

Dr. Jay Wile learned about his love for chemistry when his dedicated parents bought him his first chemistry set. Many stink bombs and a few explosions later, he was hooked! Although he loved chemistry, he also had many other interests. For a while, he thought about becoming a concert pianist, but unfortunately, his fingers were not long enough (no kidding!). As he was finishing up his high school years, he became extremely interested in the theater and began to pursue a career in acting. Partly because he learned the science behind some of the special effects of the plays in which he performed, he eventually went back to his first love: chemistry.

He went to the University of Rochester in upstate New York to study chemistry, and while he was there, he began working on nuclear chemistry experiments. He became so fascinated with nuclear chemistry that he stayed at the University of Rochester and got a Ph.D. in that field. For several years, he did research in the field under the auspices of the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation. This research led to several grants and many publications. While doing research, Dr. Wile was also an assistant professor of chemistry.

Dr. Wile’s love of science is demonstrated by the many awards he has won for excellence in teaching and research. He has also presented numerous lectures on the topics of Nuclear Chemistry, Christian Apologetics, Homeschooling, and Creation vs. Evolution. He has published 30 articles on these subjects in nationally-recognized, peer-reviewed journals, and has 9 books to his credit, most of which belong to the award-winning “Exploring Creation with” series of junior-high and high-school science courses.
