Benjamin Disrael said, “Cleanliness and order are not matters of instinct; they are matters of education.” Who knew that “cleanliness and order” were matters of homeschooling and education?  I sure never thought of it this way, but I also know that you will not run an efficient academic program without these in place.  Today is the day you must start thinking about how to bring order to your home.

Children thrive in orderly environments, and so do their mothers.  There is nothing more aggravating when you’re in the middle of a geometry lesson and you can’t find a protractor, even though you know very well you bought each child one at the beginning of the school year.  Wasting precious time finding the protractor will get even the best student out of the mood for math.

The 3 C’s of Homeschooling Spaces

The first step to order is COMBINE.  Begin by combining like items and items that belong to a certain person together.  For example:  If Kristin received glitter markers from Aunt Lou, these go into her pile.  If there are markers that no one claims, but can be useful for everyone, these go in the marker pile.  Start small.  Then work your way up. This is the most basic of all homeschooling rules when it comes to managing spaces.

Now that everything is combined into neat little piles of ownership or like things, it’s time to CONDENSE.  You may want to get the kids to help out at this point.  Check each pen and marker and make sure it works.   Pitch anything that doesn’t.  You must start asking questions like, “Is it useful?”  “Do I have a duplicate that someone else could use?”  If so, bless them with it.  “Do I really need four books on bugs?”  Maybe two would be enough.  It’s time to decide.

Once you have condensed all of your piles, it’s time to CONTAIN.  That means finding the perfect home for all of those things you just deemed useful enough to stay.  This part can be tricky.  It is really a matter of choice when it comes to containing.  No matter what kind of containers you choose to maintain your piles, they must be convenient and efficient.  This means things are easy to get to and very accessible and user friendly, or no one will ever put it back in the designated spot.

It is very important for everything to look nice and blend together.  We all want to live in a house that looks and feels comforting.  This is truly a blessing. You’re ready . . . now get set . . . Go fix your homeschooling spaces!
