Homeschool Supplies that Every Homeschool Mom Truly Needs

k12 homeschool

Doing some last-minute Christmas shopping for that homeschool mom in your life?  Here is a list of homeschool supplies she really needs, but may not actually ask for.  This is the time of year when many homeschool moms feel drained and burned out, and your gift of sensing her needs may be just what encourages her to power through to the spring!

Just make sure you buy her that other thing – that she actually DID ask for – in addition to any of these! All of these great suggetions are perfect for homeschool teachers, too. So if you’re looking for presents for both your mom and your teacher, here are really great suggestions.

A List of Homeschool Supplies and other Great Buys

  1. A hoodie sweatshirt – preferably from her alma mater. Let’s face it – nothing is more comfortable and goes well with fleece pajama pants than a big soft hoodie. And the one she’s been wearing since she graduated is getting kinda pilly and threadbare now.  Be sure to tell her she’s attractive in it, and mean it when you say so.
  2. A journaling notebook – or any dollar store spiral notebook will do. She just desperately needs something to jot down her daily to-do’s. Have the kids jazz it up with some pretty scrapbook paper from the craft store, and it’ll be special to her the whole year.
  3. A really good pair of bedroom slippers – the kind with the plastic soles on the bottom – for quick runs outside in the rain to take out the trash, or for avoiding the crumbled Cheerios on the kitchen floor which she hasn’t had a chance to sweep up yet. Be sure to tell her that you don’t care about the Cheerios on the floor, and that she deserves to be in luxurious comfort throughout the day. This may not be like any of the other homeschool supplies mentioned here, but she’s really going to love it1
  4. A really nice, lidded, insulated mug – preferably one with an uplifting or encouraging message, or one of those design-your-own kinds, and let the kids design it. She will feel appreciated and rejuvenated every morning as she’s sipping her third cup and patiently listening to her new littlest reader sounding out words (or her 8 year-old mumbling and whining about memorizing her multiplication tables). Either way, tell her the mug is to give her a little reminder of your appreciation for what she does, and to give her a little pick-me-up every morning.
  5. A really good homeschool/family planner. There are tons of them out there – digital form, printable form, or old-fashioned bound book form. That one she bought back in August didn’t work.  The one she bought last year didn’t work.  And the year before that.  …In fact, on second thought, buy her the top 4 or 5 kinds – that way she can try each one and find out which one really does work for her, before the end of this school year is out.
  6. A new printer. Not just any printer – but one that doesn’t drain the budget with every page printed. Do your research – find the best, most economical one out there (but it MUST have color printing!) – and be sure to mention how much time you spent finding just the perfect one.  Tell her the time she spends finding and printing the perfect lesson ideas for her children is well spent, and she deserves to be able to use the printer without hesitation to print anything she needs.
  7. Oh, and if you really want to blow her mind, buy her a laminator too. Tell her to have fun with it! And be sure to buy her plenty of refill packs of lamination pockets to go in it.  Tell her that what she’s doing with the kids is very special to you, and that those things need to be kept forever – and if she gives you a laminated piece of child art for your office wall – you’d better hang it up, permanently.

As you can see, these things are practical, and I’d dare say that a lot of homeschool moms would be glad to have them.  However, it’s the presentation that counts.  You could give her a rock from the backyard, have the kids paint it and cover it in glitter, and offer it to her with sincere words of thanks and appreciation, and it’s likely you’ll see a tear glistening in her eye.  And you can betcha that rock will be placed proudly on her planning desk forever.

Anything, absolutely anything, can be a reminder to the special homeschool mom in your life that she’s appreciated, worthy of praise, and can inspire her to persevere in the hard work of being a mom, and homeschooling. These homeschool supplies will really mean a lot to her!
