This is a twist on the old saying “you are what you eat”, but the truism still applies. Over time, too much of something can affect behavior and attitude.  As a part of our free homeschool inspiration series, we’re how you how reading with children can boost their knowledge tremendously.

I constantly hear from parents about their concerns in respect to fiction books. The comments, questions and complaints run the gambit from not being able find anything appropriate for their children, to giving in and allowing their child to read something they don’t personal approve and regret the decision. My response to latter group is always the same – Why? Not so much why they caved, but why do they feel powerless to say no if the book contained a subject matter they didn’t approve?

Scripture tells us in Colossians 3: 17 that whatever you do in word or deeds do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus. The Greek word Logos deals with communication in various forms. Writing is a form of communication, and perhaps one of the more powerful forms since it can invoke images by sparking the imagination. The impressions a story has upon children can last a lifetime.

Children are very easily influenced by outside sources since they lack discernment. Leaving one alone to learn discernment by reading fiction can have consequences. Don’t be thrown off by the word heart, as the Western world associates feelings with heart. In the Jewish culture, heart is used to describe behavior and character, and is found over 800 times in Scripture. God cares about a person’s behavior and character. The word for mind is found over 95 times. Perhaps one of the most important verses referring to the mind doesn’t use the word at all, but is very graphic in meaning: Ephesians 6: 17 and take the helmet salvation. Soldiers use helmets to protect their head in battle thus the metaphor in Scripture to protect a person’s mind.
